In 16th-century Benin, royal tradition demanded that the mother of a new king must die; her power seen as a threat to the throne. But Idia, a woman of vision and mystical strength, defied this fate.
She secured the crown for her son Esigie, the third son, never meant to be king, becoming the first woman to go to war and the first Queen Mother of the Benin Kingdom.
